Olympic bronze medal boxer Vijender Kumar is implicated in an international drug smuggling ring allegedly run by Anup Singh Kahlon, a Canadian of Indian origin.

The Fatehgarh Sahib District police in the Indian state of Punjab say they have arrested two persons and seized 26 kg heroin from them in Zirakpur.

While 16 kg was seized from inside the house, the other 10 kg was seized from a car, allegedly used to transport the contraband, belonging to the wife of Indian boxer Vijender Kumar, who won the bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

According to media reports, Vijender Kumar, who was in Mumbai, issued a statement on Friday denying any links with the accused and alleged that the person who was arrested in the case was trying to implicate him. He also offered full cooperation to the investigating authorities to bring the facts to light.

A report in the English daily The Tribune said that the police arrested Anup Singh Kahlon, who has been living in Canada since 1995, and his associate Kulwinder Singh, also known as Rocky, for possessing 540 grams of heroin two days ago.

During the course of investigation, the police claimed that they also recovered foreign and Indian currency worth Rs 8.9 lakh, a laptop and a vehicle, the report said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Hardial Singh Mann said that the seizure has landed a massive blow to the international drug mafia that supplied drugs in U.S., Canada and Europe, according to the report.

The report also said that vital information about the racket was recovered from their laptop.

A truck driver in Canada, Kahlon had allegedly formed a strong drug distribution network not only in the U.S. and Canada but in some European countries. He visited India frequently, allegedly to look after his drug business, the official said.

Kahlon is a native of Jandu Singha village of Jalandhar district and Kulwinder Singh belonged to Nawa Shahar Badla village of SAS Nagar district.
